Sahidic Coptic Vocabulary Cards

Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of learning a new language. Learning grammar is necessary, but one cannot understand the grammar if one cannot understand the words. Having to look up every other word is time consuming and tiresome.

Resources for learning Sahidic Coptic are somewhat scant. Available Sahidic Coptic grammars are geared towards University study, where there is a support structure. However, self students are left to themselves.

I have compiled Sahidic Coptic vocabulary cards. They are based on Bruce Metzger's "List of Words Occuring Frequently in the Coptic New Testament, Sahidic Dialect." I have revised the definitions, mainly by comparing the definitions found in Bentley Layton's "Coptic in 20 Lessons."

I use the digital flashcard web app found at iFlipr.com. You can use iFlipr on your computer, or on an iPhone if you have one. I think the iPhone app is better than the web based one. If you create an account on iFlipr, you can search for my flashcards by typing "Sahidic Metzger." To date, my Sahidic flashcards are the only ones found on iFlipr.com.

However, I realize that not all may wish to use iFlipr.com. There are other flashcard apps, or one may just wish to write out the flashcards on index cards. For that reason I am presenting all of the flashcards here. They are set in comma seperated values, so that they may be imported into flashcard programs. Personally, I prefer to have the Coptic word on the definition side in addition to the English definition, so each line has the Coptic word twice.

Those who are learning Coptic for the purpose of studying the Sahidic NT should already have a knowledge of Koine Greek. For that reason, I am only presenting native Coptic words.

Here are all Coptic words that occur over 75 times in the Sahidic Coptic New Testament. I have a short term project of creating flashcards for all words occurring over 25 times in the NT. I will add those later. There are 396 Coptic words occurring over 25 times in the Sahidic NT. This compares to 525 Greek words occurring over 25 times in the Greek NT.

Note: I have grouped the flashcards into units of about 20 words each. These were created with a beta version of my Coptic keyboard, so some of the characters are sub-optimal.

How to Install Your Coptic Keyboard

First you must create your own custom Coptic keyboard. To do this download and install Microsoft's Keyboard Layout Creator here. This program is easy to use. You just click on a key, a dialog box comes up, and you paste or type in the character you wish to use. In my previous post, I give screenshots of the character assignments I made. I also gave a list of all my letters. You can copy and paste those letters into the Keyboard Layout Creator. I assigned shift states for most of the unique Coptic characters.

In order to match J. Warren Wells' standard transliteration as shown in his pronunciation key in his lexicon, there are a couple of redundancies. The Ϣ and the Ϫ are on the "v" and "j" keys respectively. But they are also on the Shift+s and Shift+j keys.

The program is intuitive, but if you're having problems creating your keyboard, consult the Keyboard Layout Creator's documentation located in the Help menu.

Once you have created your keyboard, you much make it into a setup program that you run in Windows. In the Layout Creator, go into the Project menu, and click "Build DLL and Setup Package." Once this is done you must run the program that was created by double clicking on "setup" in the directory that was created. The keyboard should now be installed in Windows. However, you cannot use it until you add it as a keyboard.

To do this, click "Change keyboards or other input methods" in the Control Panel.

Click on "Change keyboards..."

Click on the "Add" button.

Windows does not support Coptic, so it is not listed. We must use another language with which to use the Coptic keyboard. I chose Corsican because it starts with "Co," just like Coptic.

Click on "Show More . . ." for a list of all the keyboards.

In the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, I had named my keyboard "111" so that it would appear at the top of the list. Select whatever your keyboard is named and click Ok.

Your keyboard should appear in the dialog box under the language Corsican, as above. Now click Ok.

The keyboard should now be installed and ready to use. You can switch between keyboards by hitting Left Alt + Shift. I have English, Logos' Biblical Greek, and my personal Coptic keyboard installed. I can switch between the three on the fly by pressing Left Alt + Shift.

For more information on installing a keyboard layout, you can consult Logos' documentation provided in their PDF files for their various keyboards here. They also have an instruction video. You may also install their other keyboards such as Hebrew and Greek. They work good and are not beta releases like their Coptic keyboard.

Also note that if you create large Coptic files with your custom keyboard layout, and in the future a better, standardized Coptic keyboard is released, you can convert your files to the new keyboard by doing a simple Find and Replace for each Coptic character. Such a feature is provided in Microsoft's Word and Notepad. Because of this you don't have to worry about your hard work becoming obsolete.

Typing in Coptic

Microsoft Windows as of yet does not support typing in the Coptic language.

Logos software has created a Coptic keyboard. The problem with the Logos keyboard is that it is not yet widely supported. I can get it to work fine if I'm using a word processor like MS Word, and use the New Athena Unicode font which supports Coptic. However, for web display, it doesn't work. This is what happens when you use their keyboard and post it on a website which uses standard fonts:

ϩⲛ ⲧⲉϩⲟⲩⲉⲓⲧⲉ ⲛⲉϥϣⲟⲟⲡ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡϣⲁϫⲉ

It should only be displaying a bunch of boxes. I have decided to create my own Coptic keyboard using the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator. Standard Unicode has all of the Coptic letters you need, they just doesn't look that great when used together. For example, some letters are taller than others. For some reason, Logos decided that the user had to hold down the right Alt key in order to use some common Coptic letters. I choose to use the more natural Shift key. This doesn't present a problem at all because Coptic doesn't use capital letters. Here is the mapping of the keyboard I created:

Be warned that if you are using an old version of Windows, such as XP, you may still get boxes for some of the letters. I tried this on two Windows 7 machines, and it works fine. But an older XP machine doesn't display any of the Coptic letters.

Here are the Unicode numbers I used for my letters:

Α - 0391
β - 03B2
Γ - 0393
Δ - 0394
Є - 0404
Ζ - 0396
Η - 0397
Θ - 0398
Ι - 0399
Κ - 039A
λ - 03BB
Μ - 039C
Ν - 039D
ξ - 03BE
Ο - 039F
Π - 03A0
Ρ - 03A1
С - 0421
Τ - 03A4
Υ - 03A5
Φ - 03A6
Χ - 03A7
Ψ - 03A8
Ш - 0428
Ϣ - 03E2
Ϥ - 03E4
ϩ - 03E9
Ϫ - 03EA
Ϭ - 03EC
Ϯ - 03EE

I have used the standard letters except for the following:

β for B
Є for E
λ for Λ
Ш for Ѡ

I feel that the standard Unicode Greek letters are too blocky and harsh, so I have softened my character set with the use of β, Є, and λ. I have used Ш in place of Ѡ because it is closer to Ϣ than Ѡ is. Otherwise, Ѡ tends to stick out like a sore thumb.

Here is a comparison of the standard Coptic Unicode letters with my replacement letters:

ΕΒΟΛ ΑΥѠ
ЄβΟλ ΑΥШ

Here is a comparison of a biblical passage:

ΠΑΙ ΔΕ ΠΕ ΠѠΝϨ ϢΑ ΕΝΕϨ ϪΕΚΑС ΕΥΕСΟΥѠΝΓ ΠΝΟΥΤΕ ΜΜΕ ΜΑΥΑΑϤ ΑΥѠ ΠΕΝΤΑΚΤΝΝΟΟΥϤ ΙΗСΟΥС ΠΕΧΡΙСΤΟС - John 17:3, standard Coptic

ΠΑΙ ΔЄ ΠЄ ΠШΝϩ ϢΑ ЄΝЄϩ ϪЄΚΑС ЄΥЄСΟΥШΝΓ ΠΝΟΥΤЄ ΜΜЄ ΜΑΥΑΑϤ ΑΥШ ΠЄΝΤΑΚΤΝΝΟΟΥϤ ΙΗСΟΥС ΠЄΧΡΙСΤΟС - John 17:3, my Coptic

There isn't much difference, but I believe my Coptic letters are just a little bit easier on the eyes. Feedback would be appreciated.

To test it, I typed out Horner's Sahidic John chapter 1. This was somewhat difficult, because the font in Horner's edition is terrible, and the digital scan's resolution made it hard to distinguish between certain characters.
